This Clinical Update course is available nationwide and can be delivered on the client’s site.

Introduction

This programme is for nurses, healthcare assistants, therapists and people handling staff who work in a hospital setting, a nursing/residential home or a school where people handling is undertaken frequently.

The aim of this clinical update programme is to review the causes and prevention of musculoskeletal problems and manual handling injuries, to review principles of correct body mechanics and handling techniques for inanimate loads and people, risk assessments and daily handling practices.

Course Objectives

On completion of the programme staff will have been able to:

  • Review and understand causes, prevention measures and responsibilities.
  • List four rules of body mechanics and demonstrate the power position.
  • Demonstrate body mechanics and principles of handling.
  • Be able to apply evidence based principles to job specific handling tasks.
  • Be able to assess people’s manual handling requirements, and plan and implement safe transfer methods.
  • Be able to demonstrate some of the practical skills relevant to their work areas.

Assessment & Certification

On successful completion of the course the delegates will be issued with a certificate of attendance.
